NSW: National ethanol labelling by October 31

SYDNEY, Aug 1 AAP - Petrol stations have until the end of October to spell out howmuch ethanol is in their fuel after the federal government today agreed to a uniform, national labelling regime.

Last April, federal Environment Minister David Kemp promised a national labelling regime, but no timetable was set.

From July 1, the government put a 10 per cent cap on the amount of ethanol that couldbe used in blended petrol.

State and territory fair trading ministers meeting in Sydney today said it was essentialmotorists could make an informed choice when using ethanol-blended fuel, which can damagesome engines if it exceeds certain limits.

Victorian Consumer Affairs Minister John Lenders said it was refreshing the commonwealthcommitted to a deadline after ducking and weaving for several months.

"Ethanol fuel crosses boundaries," he told reporters.

"There are consumer issues of safety, warranty issues from manufacturers, there wasa lot of uncertainty about it."

Mr Lenders said Victoria already had a labelling regime which could be used, alongwith NSW's draft regulations, as a national model.

From October 31, the national regulations would involve mandatory labelling at petrolbowsers that dispensed ethanol-blended fuel and information about using ethanol in oldercars, boats and aircraft.
